below is something i copied from a fren's blog.. very touched after reading.. and it sets me thinking too.. do read..
The new year always does bring me a certain amount of mixed feelings.
At granny's place there exists a certain set of green and blue glasses which is only to be used every new year. There are pretty blue swirls all over the glasses, and i never fail to see them every year during the lunar new year celebrations. These glasses were kept in a small cabinet by the refrigerator when the celebrations have ended, and are taken out once again every year once the lunar new year begins to serve as glasses for the guests.
Now, i know it all so well because i have lived at granny's place almost all the time when i was younger. So by now you would at least know how long this set of glasses have existed in my life.
But it was only today, that while washing some of these used glasses that i've realised the significance that the smallest details in my life holds.
I see these glasses every year, but yet all i do is take them for granted. And i only realised how much prettier they look when i noticed all the blue swirls in detail (which i didn't before). These glasses were there at every point of my life.
Though it is with much enthusiasm that i look forward to the new year celebrations every single year, i am at the same time frightened at the thought that one of my grandparents would be missing at the celebrations the very next year. Also, the sight of them growing frail with every year brings nothing but heartaches. These aches are worsened by the fact that i've spent more time with them than anyone else, since i'm the eldest of all the grandchildren.
I fear losing them. And that fear is not even one over a thousandth of my fear of cockroaches.
Some people ask me how i could stand chatting with my granny on the phone for dozens of times each month, with each session lasting for no less than 30 mins. 'What do you two talk about?', they would ask me with amazed or disbelieving faces. The truth is, most of the time our conversations just flow along naturally. I don't even have to think hard for something to talk about. It just comes.
Granny dotes on me, and i know that more than anyone else. She takes the trouble to prepare all my favourite dishes whenever i visit, and is more worried than anyone else whenever i fall ill. Whenever she knows of anything which i want to purchase, she would tell me that money is not a problem, and that she'll buy it for me if i like it.
Do you know how hard it is to see a loved one handle all the household chores, alone, at an age where she should be enjoying life? She still has to take care of my uncle's family and their needs because of some wretch who used to be part of the family.
I remember, yet again, that when i was much younger, grandpa used to bring me to the market every sunday morning when i stayed over at granny's. I hated the sight and the smell of the fishes in the wet market, and he would laugh at me wrinkling my nose.
After all that were needed were purchased and done with, we would settle ourselves down at the coffeeshop where he would have for himself a glass of kopi-o. What would forever have a place for itself in my mind was the scene of him pouring some of his coffee into a saucer so that the coffee would cool, and so that i could consume it. I would drink the coffee directly from the saucer. Sometimes grandpa would buy dough sticks, and we would eat it by dunking it in our coffee first.
Whenever we met with wet weather on our way home, he would knot the four corners of his hanky and place it on my tiny head so that i don't get drenched. He bought me a tiny orange umbrella so that i wouldn't get drenched and catch a cold.
And after all these years, i still have it with me.
And that was it. Grandpa and me. But those days were long over, and i haven't had another visit to the market with him since i turned 12.
Grandpa is now suffering from a mild case of senile dementia. You have no idea how much it hurts me to see his condition worsen with every year that has passed. He doesn't remember every single thing anymore, but i know he remembers me because he would call out to me whenever i visit. It hurts because i know he wants company, but nobody has enough time to be there for him all the time.
It feels terrible, to be uncertain of whether grandpa still holds memories of our market visits and of us.
He can't hear well too, and that really makes communication really difficult.
But i will try my best to be there for them because i love both my grandparents, like they have loved me all my life. I wish i could do a bit more for them, but i hate the fact that there's a limit to my capabilities at this point in life and that there is only so much i can do.
Probably one of the few comforts during the new year would be the very close-knitted family gatherings every new year's eve (or earlier). I could see how much happier both my grandparents are when the entire family arrives, and the whole house bustles with activity. Or when we hold our gambling sessions, and grandpa would suddenly seem very much perked up again.
I love the new year, but i hate it too because it reminds me that time has yet again slipped away and that i have lost another year's worth of time that i could have spent with my loved ones.
Cherish your loved ones. Cherish your loved ones. Cherish your loved ones.
One day, you might thank me for reminding you.haiz.. hmm.. will be updating the past few days events at a later date.. common tsets coming!!!!!!! OMG.......
